Description
Sandalwood has been a part of the religious and spiritual traditions of India since prehistory and has been effectively used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. It is antiseptic, soothing and sedative and it has a pronounced effect on mucus membranes. Chronic chest infections, sore throats and dry coughs as well as bronchitis and asthma can benefit greatly from this oil, as well as cystitis and bladder infections. It is also helpful with sexual problems such as frigidity and impotence. A study investigating the effects of inhalation of Sandalwood oil found that it elevated pulse rate, skin conductivity, and systolic blood pressure.
On the skin, sandalwood oil relieves itching and inflammation, and is most effective in relieving dehydrated skin – making it great for anti-ageing skincare – the astringent action has a great toning effect and is also used with great results in oily skin conditions, to prevent the skin from forming ugly scars and for fighting dry eczema, dry, cracked and chapped skin, rashes and acne.
Uses
In a diffuser, it is used for the treatment of sleeplessness, mental strain and stress. It helps ease anxiety and tension and acts as an aphrodisiac, relieving impotence and frigidity. Diluted to 2% or less it is said to be very effective at alleviating cystitis and vaginal infections. It is also used as an aid in meditation.
When blended in a cream or lotion it can be used for an anti-ageing treatment.
Emotions
This relaxing oil has a harmonizing and calming effect which reduces tension and confusion. It is an uplifting oil, helpful for depression, for hectic daily lifestyles and states of fear, stress, nervous exhaustion, chronic illness and anxiety. Sandalwood is used in many different ways in the spiritual traditions of the East. It is considered beneficial for meditation and for calming and focusing the mind – a (diluted) drop or two can be applied to the forehead, the temples or rubbed between the eyebrows before beginning.
