Juniperberry - Juniperus communis

Juniperberry is well known for its ability to detoxify, particularly after rich food or alcohol. Its cleansing action can also be utilised to great effect with arthritis, rheumatism and gout, since it encourages the elimination of uric acid which is a contributing factor with these diseases. Juniperberry is effective in the fight against cellulite and water retention. Excellent for the treatment of cystitis. Juniperberry oil is a sovereign skin-toner and problem skin conditions such as acne, dermatitis and weeping eczema respond very well. It is used as a preventative against ticks and fleas.

Uses

Vaporise as an anti-bacterial agent. In a diffuser it settles the nerves, purifies the atmosphere and strengthens the spirit in challenging circumstances. Diluted to 2% or less in a carrier oil it can be used in a douche or a hip bath, as well as massaged onto the abdomen. Also used to relieve rheumatic pain; to counteract alopecia; and to salve wounds. It acts as a skin toner and helps with cellulite and counteracts an oily skin, is an antiseptic and astringent oil and helpful with seborrhoea of the scalp.

Description Juniper berries have long been used as medicine by many cultures. Juniper berries act as a strong urinary tract disinfectant if consumed and were used by American Indians as a herbal remedy for urinary tract infections. Western tribes combined the berries of juniperus communis with Berberis root bark in a herbal tea to treat diabetes. Clinical studies have verified the effectiveness of this treatment in insulin-dependent diabetes. Compounds in these plants when combined and ingested have been shown to trigger insulin production in the body's fat cells, as well as stabilize blood sugar levels. Native Americans also used juniper berries as a female contraceptive.
Uses In traditional Indian medicine, the oil is applied externally to relieve rheumatic pain to counteract alopecia; as a styptic and to wounds. Dioscorides' De materia medica also lists juniper berries, when crushed and put on the penis or vagina before intercourse, as a contraceptive
